Climate-driven hydrological change and carbonate platform demise induced by the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (southern Pyrenees)

چکیده

The Campo section in the Spanish Pyrenees is classical for shallow-water Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) studies. Despite extensive work last decades, stratigraphic location of onset negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE), and hence Paleocene/Eocene (P/E) boundary, remains a matter considerable debate section. Here we present new biostratigraphic, sedimentological carbon-isotopic data across late Paleocene to Eocene strata constrain precise position P/E boundary investigate environmental changes PETM. Foraminiferal assemblages biozone SBZ4 found below Claret Formation are replaced by SBZ6 above. Detailed microfacies analysis indicated that pre-PETM upper Navarri represents transgressive inner-ramp deposits, overlain unconformably mixed carbonate-siliciclastic deposits syn-PETM Formation, turn renewed carbonate-ramp deposition post-PETM lower Serraduy Formation. temporary demise carbonate ramp during PETM ascribed increased siliciclastic supply associated with significant change regional hydrology driven an increase magnitude frequency extreme rainfall runoff events.

Evolution of the earliest horses driven by climate change in the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum.

Body size plays a critical role in mammalian ecology and physiology. Previous research has shown that many mammals became smaller during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), but the timing and magnitude of that change relative to climate change have been unclear. A high-resolution record of continental climate and equid body size change shows a directional size decrease of ~30% over the...

Hydrological Impacts of Climate Change

The increasing rate of the global surface temperature will have a significant impact on local hydrological regimes and water resources, which leads to the assessment of the climate change impacts. Main parameters that are closely related to the climate change are temperature and precipitation. Therefore, there is a growing need for an integrated analysis that can quantify the impacts of climate...

Climate change and the demise of Minoan civilization

Climate change has been implicated in the success and downfall of several ancient civilizations. Here we present a synthesis of historical, climatic, and geological evidence that supports the hypothesis that climate change may have been responsible for the slow demise of Minoan civilization. Using proxy ENSO and precipitation reconstruction data in the period 1650–1980 we present empirical and ...

The effect of climate change on flow regime using two meteorological and hydrological indices

An important and fundamental issue in Iran is to utilize water and to avoid wasting it. Therefore, climate change can be considered as an effective factor on water resources. The most tangible climate change phenomenon is drought which is much important to be identified. In this study, the effect of climate changes on flow rate in Bashar River, Shahmokhtar station of Yasouj city was evaluated u...

Hydrological Response to Human Activities and Climate Change in the Ghaleh-Shahrokh Watershed

Determining the relative contributions of human activities and climate change to variations of runoff in basin is very important for sustainable management of water resources. In this study, seven methods were used to determine these relative contributions in the Ghaleh-Shahrokh watershed as the main upper catchment of Zayandeh-Roud River. These seven methods can be divided into two main catego...
